I Got Rejected On Christmas

The project itself was born out of my desire to carry on exploring and experimenting with the practice of painting on boxes to create an extraordinary experience in a normalized space. However, one of the things that made me a little nervous was the change in location from Providence, Rhode Island to Seoul, South Korea. The difference in culture as well as the social norm meant the viewer's perspectives were shaped in a more conservative framework naturally repelling them from new experiences.

I picked up all the cardboard boxes around the city of Seoul during the eve of Christmas for three hours. On the day of the project we began on the top of the Namsan Tower, one of the most tourist centered landmarks of South Korea. Unfortunately, we were told to deconstruct the wall of boxes due to certain complaints made by those surrounding. On the other hand, we were not ready to give up yet so we moved to the side of the Han River, where we experienced our second rejection of Christmas. In the end the painting was finished in my home studio; however, the entire process of moving around and communicating unusual moments was a central aspect to the painting.

I am currently in process of editing a documentary that we made, so look forward to it. The final video will be a tribute and celebration of all the supporters and friends who showed up for me on the day of the vulnerable project.
